Modifications

Static Kit (optional accessory)

The static kit (direct link) includes static ports, tubes and fittings for instruments. The static ports are not included in the standard Empennage Kit, and is mentioned in the instructions to be an optional accessory. As you probably already know (if you are a pilot), the static ports are small openings on the fuselage that measure the ambient (still) air pressure outside the aircraft — known as static pressure.

This static pressure is a critical input for several flight instruments and systems, including:

  • Altimeter – measures altitude by comparing static pressure to a standard pressure reference.
  • Vertical Speed Indicator (VSI) – measures the rate of change in static pressure to show climb or descent rate.
  • Airspeed Indicator (ASI) – works together with the pitot tube, comparing dynamic pressure (from the pitot tube) to static pressure to calculate airspeed.

The static ports must be placed where the airflow over the aircraft skin is undisturbed to ensure accurate pressure readings. If a static port becomes blocked (by ice, dirt, or tape after maintenance, for example), the altimeter, VSI, and airspeed indicator will all give incorrect readings, which can be very dangerous.

So, the ports is an accessory that you would want. It’s just a matter of which ports and where they should be situated.

 

Static Ports Deluxe (deluxe version of the ports from the optional accessory above)

The deluxe ports (direct link) are aftermarket ports which are designed to replicate the shape of a SD-43-BSLF blind rivet (after being riveted ofcourse). They are CNC milled and created by ShowPlanes in Medford. I bought mine from Vans Aircraft. I wanted them as I think they look better – and I like the quality in them.

 

NACA Vents

I found my NACA Vents at Vans Aircraft (direc link). NACA Vents are a type of low-drag air inlet developed by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) — the predecessor to NASA.

They are specially shaped recessed air inlets designed to draw air into an aircraft (or other vehicle) efficiently without creating significant aerodynamic drag.

A NACA vent is a shallow, ramp-shaped duct that starts narrow at the front and widens smoothly toward the back, with curved sidewalls.

This shape:

  • Uses the boundary layer (the thin layer of slower-moving air close to the aircraft’s surface).

  • Creates vortices that pull faster-moving air from outside the boundary layer into the duct.

  • Allows effective airflow into the system with minimal disturbance to the external airflow.

NACA vents are used to:

  • Provide cooling air to avionics, brakes, or engines.

  • Supply fresh air to the cockpit or cabin.

  • Vent air overboard in pressurized systems or cooling circuits.

Advantages:

  • Low drag: Much less aerodynamic resistance than a protruding scoop or intake.

  • Efficient airflow: Good air intake performance for their size.

  • Simple and durable: No moving parts and easy to manufacture.
